Chamber Hosts 2026 State of the City Highlighting Decatur’s Growth and Momentum

The Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2026 State of the City on April 16 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Decatur Riverfront, bringing together community leaders, business professionals and residents to hear updates on the momentum shaping Decatur’s future.

The program, centered on the theme “In Decatur, We Are Better Together,” highlighted the collaboration between city leadership, employees and the business community that continues to drive growth and progress across the city.

Mayor Kent Lawrence joined moderator Wade Weaver, General Manager of Adams Beverages and Chair of the Chamber’s Public Policy Committee, for a conversation focused on economic investment, long-term planning and how that growth is translating into meaningful improvements for residents. The discussion followed a video highlighting significant investment and development taking place across Decatur.

The program also featured a public safety segment with Police Chief Torry Mack and Fire Chief Nathan Springer, emphasizing the City’s commitment to maintaining a strong and responsive public safety system.

Mayor Lawrence was later joined by key department leaders, including Johnny Jones, Director of Decatur Youth Services; Kyle Demeester, Chief Financial Officer; and Hunter Allen, Director of Parks & Recreation. The group discussed priorities ranging from youth programs and parks initiatives to financial planning and long-term sustainability.

A special moment during the program recognized City Attorney Herman Marks for 45 years of dedicated service to the City of Decatur. Marks was honored on stage for his lasting impact, leadership, and commitment to the community.

To close the program, Mayor Lawrence was joined by Crystal Brown, President and CEO of the Chamber, for a discussion on the importance of continued partnership between the City and the business community in supporting Decatur’s growth.
