Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Decatur, Alabama

History of Women’s Chamber: Founded in 1939 under the auspices of the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Chamber has made outstanding contributions in both personal services and financial support to Decatur’s civic and cultural life. Beginning in the early days with barbecue pits, tennis courts, and the picturesque bridge in Delano Park - in the war years with donations to the Service Men’s Club and American Red Cross - later with newcomers parties and evenings of games, contributions to the hospital, Boys Club, library, Calhoun Community College - beginning a city beautification program by the planting dogwood and crepe myrtle trees - most recently, supporting various local charities through proceeds from a spring pilgrimage of homes, contributions to the Calhoun College Foundation and Leadership Morgan County scholarships, and supporting the Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts  - Women’s Chamber continues as an active civic group whose members work to help make Decatur, Alabama a better place in which to live and work.

Objectives: To promote a spirit of friendly cooperation, to establish good will in our trading territory, and to encourage a clean, healthy city, with proper facilities for recreation, entertainment, and education.

Membership: Consists of women of Decatur and adjacent areas who are interested in the objectives set forth by the organization.

Meetings: Monthly on the third Friday at 12 noon at Decatur Country Club, beginning in September and ending in May of each year.

Programs: Speakers present topics of particular interest to women at each meeting with the exception of May, when the program is replaced by memorial services for deceased members, installation of officers, presentation of gifts and completion of year-end business.

Community Service Projects: Calhoun Community College Foundation Scholarship, Leadership Morgan County Scholarship, Women’s Chamber Memorial, Princess Theatre, Spring Pilgrimage of Homes.
