This is an exciting time to call Decatur home.
On Jan. 25, at the Chamber’s State of Healthcare Address, I was excited to share with the community news about Huntsville Hospital Health System investing an additional $20 million for capital improvement projects at the Decatur Campus. The announcement came on the heels of the hospital’s first strategic plan, about which I’m incredibly excited. Let me tell you why.
First, you spoke and we listened! I felt it was imperative that the community have a say in the development of our first strategic plan. So, we turned to you! We held focus groups, dug deep into our patient satisfaction data, developed our first Patient Family Advisory Counsel and gathered survey data. The process lasted a little over a year and we used the feedback to provide solutions to the primary opportunities you identified: modernize and update our facilities and improve the patient experience.
Second, you spoke and Huntsville Hospital Health System listened! Once the plan was completed, it was obvious that it would require an investment from our parent organization. Our plan needed an accelerated infusion of capital on top of what the System had already invested. This would allow us to immediately begin on the proposed construction projects and complete them in about 24 months as opposed to the five years it would have normally taken working with annual capital. The System reviewed all the data and decided that the needs of our hospital and community were important enough to invest in now!
At the State of Healthcare announcement, Huntsville Hospital Health System CEO David Spillers said it wasn’t a difficult decision to make because the level of care at Decatur Morgan Hospital is as good as any in the country. The hospital’s future is dependent on local support and this investment addresses the needs they outlined.
What does this mean for our patients and the community? It’s very simple, but very impacting: more private rooms, major renovations of all patient rooms, a brand new MRI suite, a bright and modern entrance, and an improved and expanded emergency department experience.
An investment of this magnitude in your community needs your support to be successful. World-class healthcare is available right here in your own backyard. This is YOUR hospital.
