Welcome to Decatur, Alabama -

This is a place where the air is cleaner, nature grows freer, and the people are friendlier. Newcomers often ask "how have you managed such a masterpiece?" The answer lies in a secret held since Decatur's inception in 1823. It began with naval officer Commodore Stephen Decatur whose famous toast revealed it. Families knew it and taught it to their children. And through the years, despite our growth, it has not been forgotten. Faith in God, in our country and in our family are fundamental principles that have anchored our community. Historic Districts like Old Decatur and New Albany, the Old State Bank and historic Bank Street, and dozens of homes and churches throughout Decatur still stand as a reminder of our roots ... and spur us on to growth.

And have we grown ! Home to America's first wave pool in Point Mallard Park, Decatur holds many attractions like the Deep South's only Open-Air Ice Rink. Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge and Cook's Natural Science Museum celebrate the natural beauty of our environment and our efforts to preserve it. Annual events like the Alabama Jubilee and the Hot Air Balloon Race enthrall people of all ages.

Economic growth stems from new industries lining the river. Family-owned businesses, commercial and residential developments, and new schools and churches boast of Decatur's continued success.

We are proud of our progress, and of our past. And we are excited that you, too, will discover the beauty of Decatur that we have grown to love. I encourage you to join our friendly community and enjoy the best of both worlds ... the beauty of nature with the convenience of city; small-town closeness with unlimited growth potential; and roots rich in history with a promising vision for the future.

Sincerely,

John Seymour
